You know those coupons you get in the mail for 20% off at Linens 'n Things? We actually used one the other day and got something Neal and I have wanted for a long time . . .an Ice Cream maker! Oh yes, something we should have registered for when we got married 8 years ago (then maybe we wouldn't have received so many stinkin' towels!). Anyway, we employed our new machine the other night and made some completely delectable Chocolate Velvet Ice Cream. It worked like a dream and the result was so yummy, I thought I would share the recipe, which originally came from Elliott and Ginger. So if you were smart and registered for an ice cream maker, make this tonight; you'll thank me!
Chocolate Velvet Ice Cream
2/3 c. white sugar
1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
3 egg yolks, beaten
2 2/3 c. heavy cream
1/3 c. semisweet chocolate
In a large bowl, stir together sugar and cocoa. Add egg yolks and blend with electric mixer. Add cream a little at a time, beating well after each addition. Chill mixture in refrigerator. While cream mixture is chilling, grate chocolate chips in blender or food processor. Stir into cream mixture. Freeze in canister of ice cream maker according to manufacturer's instructions.

That looks delish! We got an ice cream maker as a wedding gift, and I'm ashamed to say... we've never pulled it out. Home made ice cream and popcorn are a BIG tradition in my dad's family. Every family owns their own maker and every year at Christmas when we lived in Cali we'd get together and have 7 or 8 ice cream makers going... so fun. Ours is the kind you've got to put ice around the bucket and rock salt... this one looks so much easier... and possibly quieter too? You've inspired me to break ours out (since my fam was always so close by we always used theirs b/c the drum was 2x the size of ours, so there was plenty to be had by all!) Okay, didn't mean to go off on such a long one... but it's a fun family tradition!
Yeah for homemade ice cream... it is so yummy!
By the way, we used that coupob once too... to buy a DYSON vacuum... love the discount!
we have that same icre cream maker and LOVE it - the problem only lies in that you need that bowl thing to be frozen at any given time...I guess what we need is an outside freezer in the garage...oh wait, we don't even have a garage - problematic - some day, right?
and those coupons are the bomb - L&T will honor BB&B's coupons as long as they are not expired, so we picked up some new calfalon skillets the other day - score!
we have that same icecream maker (we got 2 for our wedding, this one and a regular one where you need the salt/ice) - this one is awesome since the bowl is frozen, it works so well! also, the basic vanilla recipe is delicious and totally evil (cream, sugar, vanilla)... mmm I think I will have to go get that little silver bowl and FREEZE it so it's ready!
You might want to use "pasturized" eggs when making an ice cream mix that is not cooked. They cost a bit more but I always err on the side of caution when it comes to raw eggs.
Only have used our ice cream maker once.. but I think we'll have to pull it out to try that recipe!
I have this exact same machine but I don't have any good recipes. I will have to try the Chocolate Velvet. Thanks.
